My Brother's Keeper

What if he was your own brother? It is 1607 in Scotland, during the reign of James VI, a time when paranoia and superstition ruled the land, and even the most innocent of souls are tortured and burned as witches on the flimsiest scraps of evidence. This is the story of William Fylbrigge, an idealist who sees his opportunity to bring a voice of reason to this unreasonable time when he is named heir to his foster father's dukedom -- a title highly coveted by his treacherous brother, Lord Thomas of Aberdoir.

Having survived a traumatizing childhood and witnessing first hand the horror of the witch trials and the aftermath of the fires, William is spurred into a personal crusade to take on the mantle of 'defender' to the wrongly accused. Using an innate charm and uncanny powers of persuasion, he successfully wins the freedom of a young woman who is within moments of execution. But it is when he uses his gift of eloquence to negotiate and win questionable trade agreements for the duke, that he inadvertently gives Thomas the perfect means to destroy him.

With the witch hysteria to his advantage, Thomas is quick to use William's outspoken reputation against him, and calls him out as an enchanter. But William has a secret of his own, and what Thomas doesn’t know is his accusation is far closer to the truth than he ever suspected. William soon finds himself facing the very same atrocities he has rallied against so often, with no one willing to rally for him. In his struggles to survive the tortures long enough to prove his innocence, he must also fight the demons in his own mind, and leftover scars of his childhood. But the cost of victory is far greater than he ever could have imagined.

Unbelievable suspense!

A must read to anyone who likes building suspense. This book blew my mind! I know, because I read 2-3 novels a week. One of the best of the decade. - Patrick Lee Hebert -- Highland poetry forum

On a par with John Jakes and beyond!

From the prologue through the epilogue I was hooked. Lorrieann Russell crafted her characters so well it was easy for me to 'see' the adventure unfold. She took me from laughter to tears to surprise, and back again. The character of William is one that will stay with me for a long time. – J.W. Coffey, Author

It Doesn't Get More Dramatic Than This .

Russell's skill with plot-development is impressive. She has a talent for unseen plot twists; she's good with suspense and most of her dialog is smooth and natural. No doubt about it, Lorrieann Russell can create plot and characters like nobody's business. – HippoPress, Manchester, NH
